Interest Per Second Calculation
The interest per second display is calculated using the following methodology:
- Base Rate: Weighted average interest rate on total federal debt (approximately 3.2% as of 2024)
- Formula: (Total Debt ร Interest Rate) รท (365 ร 24 ร 60 ร 60)
- Example: $1.3 trillion ร 3.2% รท 31,536,000 seconds = ~$1,317 per second
- Updates: Recalculated quarterly based on latest interest rate data from Bank of Canada
Debt Per Citizen Calculation
Per capita debt figures are calculated using official population statistics:
- Population Data: Statistics Canada Population Estimates
- Update Frequency: Quarterly population estimates (latest available)
- Formula: Total Federal Debt รท Current Canadian Population
- Current Estimate: ~$33,000 per Canadian citizen (as of Q3 2024)
- Methodology Note: Uses total population including all age groups
Net Debt-to-GDP Ratio
The debt-to-GDP ratio calculation follows international standards:
- Debt Measure: Net debt (total liabilities minus financial assets)
- GDP Source: Statistics Canada Gross Domestic Product
